Hello everyone -
Here it is, the next version of MSYS. Read the WHATSNEW.109
file for a changes between 1.08 and 1.09. Note that the main
documentation file remains unchanged from 1.08. I was unable to
get my BBSLIST.DAT file to fit on the disk, so I will no longer
be distributing it on the MSYS distribution disk. I have
included my BBSTONTS.DAT file. A program is also included in the
WHATSNEW.109 file to reconstruct a BBSLIST.DAT file from my
BBSTONTS.DAT file (qth and zip codes for stations will not be
recreated). If you really want my BBSLIST.DAT file it will be
available via mail for the same prices as the MSYS distribution
disk.
I am working on the MSYS book. Its taking a lot more
time than I first imagined. I will advise when it is ready. DRSI
board support: Good news and bad news. The good news is support
for it is included in this version of MSYS. Bad news is that it
requires two external routines (a device driver and a TSR
program that are not currently provided, about 30K total).
Performance is improving but all the bugs haven't been worked
out yet. Again, when its ready I will let you know all about it.
@MSYS route: Things seem to have settled down. Please DO
NOT USE IT! I have no objections to anyone setting up other
routes that you may desire for any purposes. I would suggest
consideration of starting up voice net(s) on HF for rapid
exchange of information/questions.
Automatic message holding: Not included in the docs is the
TITLE= parameter that you can also include in your specifications.
If used, this should be the last parameter on the line. If the value
given for TITLE= is found any where in the title of a message (and
all other specifications are met) the message will be held.
Future plans: compacting the code (an ongoing effort),
improving the various protocol implementations and possibly an
attempt at modularization so you can leave out major parts you
don't want (BBS, TCP/IP, and/or network nodes) so as to free up
memory (this may be a few releases down the line - I've been
playing with Borland's C++ and it has some interesting
posibilities but MSYS doesn't run when compiled with it). Looks
like I may also be including support for the Buckmaster CD ROM
callbook disk. Next major version is planned for release around
the beginning of the year.
HERE IS SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT: When you order disks from me,
be sure to tell me what version you now have. Otherwise I may send
you something you already have. And also be sure to include your
CALLSIGN as this is how I maintain my records. Also give me your
full name and address.
Due to the logistics of storage, if you send me a disk, mailer and
return postage, I will only provide the current release. I will not
be able to store them for future releases.
If you have problems getting MSYS going here are some things to
try that have helped many who have called:
1. Make sure you have FILES=20 and BUFFERS=20 in CONFIG.SYS
2. Try adding STACKS=0,0 to CONFIG.SYS
3. Get rid of anything resident (check AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS)
4. Run MUTIL 4 (do this every time you start MSYS)
5. Simplify MSYS.OPT as much as possible; remove all PORT statements
6. Delete your MSYS.DO file (after making a backup!)
These items should get you to the point where MSYS will work. From here
try putting things back and see what causes failure.
NOTE THE PRICES FOR FUTURE RELEASES OF MSYS (includes disk, mailer and
postage)
US $5
Canada $7.50
Other $10 (includes airmail delivery)
Have fun folks, and please try not to complain too much about
something you are getting for free! Your comments, questions and
suggestions are always welcome. But lets keep it friendly!
